How a public water system works

A public water system takes raw water and delivers it safe, under pressure, around the clock. Here is the path it takes, in order. These stages map directly onto the Texas Class D water exam subjects, so following the flow makes the material easier to hold.

    Source

    Water starts as groundwater pumped from wells or surface water drawn from a lake, river, or reservoir. The source sets how much treatment the water needs before anyone can drink it.

    Treatment

    Surface water usually needs the most work: coagulation, settling, and filtration to remove particles. Many groundwater sources need less. The goal is the same, clear water ready to disinfect.

    Disinfection

    Chlorine inactivates disease-causing organisms, and a small chlorine residual is carried into the system so the water stays protected all the way to the tap.

    Storage

    Treated water is held in ground and elevated tanks. Storage covers busy demand hours, keeps pressure steady, and holds a reserve for firefighting.

  5. 5

    Distribution

    Pumps and pressurized mains carry the water to homes and businesses. Keeping enough pressure everywhere protects the water from contamination getting in.

  6. 6

    Monitoring

    Operators sample constantly, for coliform bacteria, chlorine residual, and turbidity, to prove the water stays safe and to catch a problem before customers ever see it.
