How a wastewater treatment plant works
A wastewater plant cleans used water in stages, each removing more of what the last one left behind. Here is the path water takes, in order. These stages are the backbone of the Texas Class D wastewater exam, so knowing the flow makes the subjects click into place.

Collection
Sewers and lift stations carry wastewater from homes and businesses to the plant. Nothing is treated yet; the job here is to keep it moving without backups or overflows.

Preliminary treatment
Bar screens and grit chambers pull out rags, sticks, and sand. These would clog pumps and wear out equipment, so they come out first.

Primary treatment
In quiet settling tanks, heavy solids sink to the bottom as primary sludge while grease and light material float to be skimmed. A large share of solids leaves the water here.

Secondary treatment
Biology does the heavy lifting. In activated sludge or a trickling filter, microorganisms and added air break down the dissolved and fine waste that settling cannot remove.

Disinfection
Before the treated water leaves, chlorine or ultraviolet light inactivates the remaining pathogens so the effluent is safe to return to a river, lake, or the ground.

Solids handling
The solids removed along the way are thickened, digested, and dewatered into biosolids, which are disposed of or reused on land under strict rules.
