Study the Class D wastewater exam, area by area

The Class D wastewater exam covers the whole plant, from the collection lines to the treated effluent and the solids. Here are the major areas in plain language, with one-tap practice for each subject inside them. Study an area, drill its subjects, move on. Most of it is knowledge, not math.

  1. Regulations, permits, and management

    What governs a wastewater system and how it is run day to day: the state rules, the discharge permit the plant operates under, basic recordkeeping and reporting, and the general operator knowledge the rest of the exam assumes.

    What to nail. Know that the plant runs to a permit, what the operator must record and report, and the plain vocabulary of the system.

  2. Safety and laboratory

    Staying safe and knowing your numbers: the real hazards of a wastewater plant (confined spaces, and gases such as hydrogen sulfide and methane), chemical handling, and the routine lab tests an operator runs to see how the plant is doing.

    What to nail. Know the confined-space and gas hazards cold, and what the common lab tests tell you about the process.

  3. Collection and pumping

    How wastewater gets to the plant: the collection system of gravity sewers and lift stations, and the pumps that move it. Blockages, inflow and infiltration, and keeping lift stations running are the operator's concern here.

    What to nail. Understand how a lift station works and why inflow and infiltration matter.

  4. Preliminary and primary treatment

    The first steps at the plant: screening and grit removal take out rags, trash, and sand, then primary clarifiers let heavier solids settle out before biological treatment. It is mostly physical separation, not biology yet.

    What to nail. Know what preliminary treatment removes and what a primary clarifier does.

  5. Biological treatment

    The heart of the plant, where microorganisms eat the waste: activated sludge, trickling filters, and treatment ponds are the common processes, and process control is how the operator keeps the microbes healthy and the effluent clean.

    What to nail. Understand what the microbes need (food, oxygen, time) and the basics of activated sludge and process control.

  6. Disinfection and effluent

    The last steps before the water leaves: disinfection kills remaining organisms, and the treated effluent is discharged under the plant's permit. Meeting the permit limits at this point is the whole goal of the plant.

    What to nail. Know why the effluent is disinfected and that it must meet permit limits before discharge.

  7. Solids and biosolids

    What happens to everything that settled out: sludge is digested to stabilize it and cut its volume, and the resulting biosolids are handled and disposed of under the rules. Solids handling is a big part of running a real plant.

    What to nail. Know why sludge is digested and that biosolids disposal is regulated.

  8. Design and math

    The sizing and the numbers: basic design criteria for the parts of a plant, and the operator math the exam asks for, such as flows, detention time, and dosages. A non-programmable calculator is allowed.
